THE RED: HEART AND HEARTACHE OF THE VALLEY
Courtesy of North Dakota Water Magazine

All rivers change over time by the forces of nature and at the hands of humans. Nature has taken its toll on the Red River of the North over thousands of years. Immigrants to the Northern Plains took just over a century to change the river that forms North Dakota's eastern border. They took its wild winding ways and altered it into an agricultural and industrial workhorse. But the Red still rebels back to its ancient character when it viciously attacks with floods and decidedly deserts the valley's inhabitants during droughts. The Red is the heart and heartache of the Red River Valley. To learn more click here.
