WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT FEDERAL FLOOD INSURANCE?

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was created to provide flood insurance to home and business owners in communities that adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances to reduce future flood damage.

  • How do you know if flood insurance is right for you?
  • What is the typical cost and how much should you spend?
  • Can you afford it and when should you get it?
  • Once you buy insurance, how do you pay for it?

The National Flood Insurance Program can answer those questions and much more. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is in charge of the National Flood Insurance Program. The NFIP website includes information about the NFIP and other flood disaster assistance which is available from the federal government.

The Community Rating System (CRS) is a program of the NFIP which provides incentives, in the form of reduced premiums, to communities that undertake flood mitigation activities in excess of NFIP minimum standards. Additional support material is available from the FEMA Mitigation Library and from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The NFIP offers three Standard Flood Insurance Policy forms:
The Dwelling policy form which is used to insure residential structures and their contents including individual condominium units
• The General Property policy form which is used for other-residential and non-residential structures and their contents.
• The Residential Condominium Building Association policy form is used for residential condominium buildings association & their contents owned by the condominium association.

To determine whether or not you live in the flood plain, check out FEMA 's Flood Plain Maps.

The Flood Hazard Mapping page from FEMA's Technical Services Division provides an overview of the NFIP and FEMA's map modernization program. It covers everything homeowners, business owners, lenders, insurers, planners, engineers, surveyors, floodplain managers and community officials need to know aobut the NFIP floodplain mapping program. It also offers on-line hazard maps and tutorials.
