Catfish
(Ictalurus punctatus)
The
Channel Catfish is the most widespread and abundant of all catfish.
Young channel catfish (sometimes called fiddlers) are greenish
in color with dark spots and black pigment outlining their fins.
Adult females are often a coppery brown or silvery gray color,
while adult males sport a dark blue or gray color with thickened
lips and head muscles during the breeding season. The channel
catfish is not a picky eater. Its diet consists mainly of fish,
but also includes insects, freshwater clams, snails, algae,
and even cottonwood seeds. Channel cats are most active under
the cover of darkness. |
