Common Sulfur Butterfly (Colias philodice)

The name "butterfly" was probably first applied to this European species of the insect because of its color. The Common Sulfur has yellow wings with dark brown edges--with a brown spot on each of the front wings and an orange spot on each of the hind wings. They feed on alfalfa, clover, and other legumes.
