Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)

The Painted Turtle is named for the colorful design along the edges and underside of its shell (called a carapace). The Painted Turtle is very tolerant of cold weather. You will see them sitting on logs or in the water from the middle of April to the end of October. They spend the rest of the year in mud under the ice of the river.
